Residential Asbestos Surveys

Often mixed with other materials, asbestos can be extremely difficult to identify in your home. If your home was built before the year 2000, and you’re planning refurbishment, renovation or demolition works, its essential that you test for asbestos before any work commences.

The survey team at Safe Strip UK will travel to your property and collect samples that will be tested and analysed for any asbestos containing materials at a UKAS-accredited lab. This is a cost effective and fast solution to identify the presence of asbestos and create an action plan for its safe containment or removal. At Safe Strip UK, we pride ourselves on acting with the utmost professionalism and diligence when dealing with all clients.

Commercial Asbestos Surveys

As a property owner, you can be fined or even imprisoned for ignoring asbestos related problems on your premises. As a landlord, tenant or letting agent of a commercial property in the UK, you are responsive for managing asbestos. The Control of Asbestos Regulation 2012 states that all commercial buildings must have an Asbestos Management Plan in place.

The common mistake many commercial property owners make is thinking that completion of a standard Asbestos Management Survey complies with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. However, there are further steps that must be implemented such as training, management planning and review. For many property owners this can be dauting as they don’ have the qualifications or time to undertake this activity.

This is where Safe Strip UK can help. As a leading UK asbestos management specialist, our team can manage all your asbestos requirements, taking away the stress and pressure that comes with asbestos.

OUR CLIENTS

Identifying asbestos and providing cost-effective solutions for its removal

There are three different types of asbestos survey that can be carried out as well as compliance reinspection’s. The type of survey required depends on your asbestos management plan and your plans for the property. Safe Strip UK will recommend the most appropriate and cost-effective solution based on your unique requirements.

Asbestos Management Survey
An asbestos management survey is the standard survey used to recognise the presence of asbestos containing materials that are at risk of being damaged or disturbed and assess their condition. This type of survey addresses the possibility of hazard to your health and forms the structure of an Asbestos Management Plan. An asbestos management survey causes only minor disruption.
Refurbishment & Demolition Surveys
A refurbishment or demolition survey is needed prior to any refurbishment or demolition work is carried out on your property. During these types of surveys, our team will review all areas where potential refurbishment work will be carried out, or the whole building if demolition is planned. These surveys will cause slight disruption and damage to all areas that need assessed.
Asbestos Re-Inspection Surveys
If Asbestos containing materials are in good condition, or have been sealed, and are at low risk of being disturbed, they are often left in place and managed safely. This can be a safer option than disturbing and removing them. The condition of these asbestos materials will need regular assessment, with the results recorded through the annual asbestos re-inspection survey.
Asbestos Risk Assessments
If your renovations or building work is likely to disturb or damage an asbestos containing material, you must ensure that an asbestos risk assessment is carried out. During an asbestos risk assessment, our team will examine the potential risks to health and identify the precautionary measures that are needed to ensure the environment is a safe place to work.
Asbestos Bulk Sampling & Testing
It’s not always necessary to complete a full asbestos survey to identify asbestos within your property. Safe Strip UK can travel to your premises and safely collect samples that can be analysed for asbestos containing materials. Sample results can be supplied in a simple bulk analysis report or a detailed sampling report containing photos and plans depending on your needs.

Anyone can be at risk from asbestos exposure, however those working in the building industry are more commonly affected. Most victims who suffer from asbestos related diseases have worked in building trades including builders, carpenters, joiners, plumbers, electricians, demolition workers and more. Either they were exposed to asbestos fibres in their daily work with asbestos materials or work with asbestos was being carried out near them.
Asbestos was commonly used in buildings in places like: Insulation, Interior Wall Paint, Ceilings, Wood Stoves and Fireplaces, Window Putty, Garden Sheds and Garages, Drywall, Floor Tiles, Carpet Underlay, Water Heaters, Air Condition or Heating Ducts, Asbestos Cement Pipes, Boiler and Pipe Insulation.

Having established the presence of asbestos you will need to carry out a risk assessment and create an asbestos management plan in accordance with HSE guidelines which must determine whether the work to be carried out is licensed or non-licensable work. All licensable work must be notified to the appropriate enforcing authority depending on the nature of the premises and must be worked on by a fully licensed contractor with the appropriate training and protective equipment.

While removing Asbestos, the team at Safe Strip UK will ensure the asbestos related area is sealed off using polythene to create an airtight enclosure which contains the asbestos airborne fibers. Controlled wetting techniques are the then undertaking such as spraying, injection with needles or using a sealant to restrict the release of asbestos fibres.

The contaminated waste is then securely bagged and sealed in asbestos waste sacks, appropriately labeled, and safely transported to a specialist asbestos related disposal site.

Once the asbestos waste has been removed from the site, all surfaces in the sealed containment area are cleaned and vacuumed to remove any remaining debris. Once the work has been completed, the team at Safe Strip UK will arrange for a UKAS accredited laboratory to undertake inspection off the area, before dismantling of the enclosure.

Its important that you don’t touch the suspect area and if possible, secure the area to make sure no other person can encounter the material. Call our team immediately on 0191 5121 046 to arrange an inspection, especially if you’re planning any DIY or renovation work.

If you have already disturbed or damaged asbestos through decorating, it’s important that you don’t attempt to clean the area up yourself. Using a vacuum for example may cause more harm than good by causing the fibers to spread more rapidly. You should get everyone out of the area as soon as possible and close the door on that area or room. If someone was in close contact with the damaged material, you should remove your clothing, place it inside a bin liner and shower off as soon as possible.

Call our team as soon as possible and we will arrange for someone to assess the situation and advise on how to proceed.

It can be difficult to identify asbestos by visual analysis. If you suspect that a part of your home contains asbestos, a sample of the material must be sent to a certified asbestos testing lab. This should only be done by a certified asbestos specialist to ensure sampling is carried out safely.

Anyone that is responsible for the maintenance of premises has a duty to manage asbestos and protect anyone using the building from the risks associated with asbestos exposure. This means that the duty holder must find whether asbestos is present in the building, and if so, keep records of its condition, assess the risks and plan how to manage them.

If you are a building or business owner and have failed to protect employees against asbestos exposure, those employees may be able to make a claim against you.

Safe Strip UK proudly holds a full Health and Safety Executive (HSE) license to undertake work with asbestos in all parts of the UK. We dispose of asbestos safely and responsibly through the correct channels while all our operatives are highly skilled in handling asbestos contamination. Our team are trained beyond the requirements of The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
