Higher-risk asbestos removal work must only be carried out by a licensed and trained contractor in the UK due to the likelihood of the material giving off highly hazardous asbestos fibres. When working with higher risk Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM’s) it’s especially important that all work is correctly planned and completed to the Control of Asbestos Regulations.

Licensable work with Asbestos is where the risk assessment cannot clearly demonstrate that the concentration of asbestos will not exceed 0.1 asbestos fibres per cubic centimetre of air (0.1 f/cm3) (averaged over a four-hour period). This hazardous waste is deemed extremely dangerous and has relations to various ailments and health issues. Anyone can be at risk from asbestos exposure, however those working in the building industry are more commonly affected. Most victims who suffer from asbestos related diseases have worked in building trades including builders, carpenters, joiners, plumbers, electricians, demolition workers and more. Either they were exposed to asbestos fibres in their daily work with asbestos materials or work with asbestos was being carried out near them.
Having established the presence of asbestos you will need to carry out a risk assessment and create an asbestos management plan in accordance with HSE guidelines which must determine whether the work to be carried out is licensed or non-licensable work. All licensable work must be notified to the appropriate enforcing authority depending on the nature of the premises and must be worked on by a fully licensed contractor with the appropriate training and protective equipment.
While removing Asbestos, the team at Safe Strip UK will ensure the asbestos related area is sealed off using polythene to create an airtight enclosure which contains the asbestos airborne fibres. Controlled wetting techniques are the then undertaking such as spraying, injection with needles or using a sealant to restrict the release of asbestos fibres.
The contaminated waste is then securely bagged and sealed in asbestos waste sacks, appropriately labelled, and safely transported to a specialist asbestos related disposal site.
Once the asbestos waste has been removed from the site, all surfaces in the sealed containment area are cleaned and vacuumed to remove any remaining debris. Once the work has been completed, the team at Safe Strip UK will arrange for a UKAS accredited laboratory to undertake inspection off the area, before dismantling of the enclosure.
Its important that you don’t touch the suspect area and if possible, secure the area to make sure no other person can encounter the material. Call our team immediately on 0191 5121 046 to arrange an inspection, especially if you’re planning any DIY or renovation work.
If you have already disturbed or damaged asbestos through decorating, it’s important that you don’t attempt to clean the area up yourself. Using a vacuum for example may cause more harm than good by causing the fibers to spread more rapidly. You should get everyone out of the area as soon as possible and close the door on that area or room. If someone was in close contact with the damaged material, you should remove your clothing, place it inside a bin liner and shower off as soon as possible.
Call our team as soon as possible and we will arrange for someone to assess the situation and advise on how to proceed.
Anyone that is responsible for the maintenance of premises has a duty to manage asbestos and protect anyone using the building from the risks associated with asbestos exposure. This means that the duty holder must find whether asbestos is present in the building, and if so, keep records of its condition, assess the risks and plan how to manage them.
If you are a building or business owner and have failed to protect employees against asbestos exposure, those employees may be able to make a claim against you.
